As someone who has always seen John Prescott as an electoral liability to Tony Blair I can't believe that Blair hasn't taken the opportunity of recent events to ask for his resignation.
Whilst I may concede some ground to the conspiracy theory that this story was brought to the surface now (after all the affair has long since ended) to deflect the heat from Charles Clarke, if that were the idea it's not working!
The point of this post though, is not the call for the resignations of any politicians - but rather to draw attention to the out-of-whack moral standards by which our society is (mis)guided.
The biggest defence of Mr Prescott has been that "he has not broken the ministerial code of conduct." How valid can such a code be if it doesn't include "if you are married, don't have an affair with a member of your department"? Morality (at least in the government's eyes) is pragmatic - "did his behaviour affect his ability to do the job?" But morality goes to the core of who you are and the principles that guide every aspect of your life.
In our present government culture even morality is measured by outcomes!
As Christians we must be determined to live morally consistent lives - where what we are convinced of determines the way we act and speak. Out morality flows from the fact that "the kingdom is within you" - and whatever fills the heart will always overflow into words and actions, whether you are John Prescott or Billy Graham!
